The Cheyenne Scrabble Club hosted the first WGPO-sanctioned National Scrabble Day Scrabble tournament in Cheyenne on Saturday, April 13, 2019. April 13 was declared National Scrabble Day over a decade ago, as it’s the birth day of Scrabble creator Alfred Butts.
The tournament has another name: the Rocky Mountain Word-eo (pronounced Word-day-oh), which I’ll be using in future to publicize what I hope will be a major Rocky Mountain Scrabble tournament, drawing players from at least the five states surrounding Wyoming as well as Wyomingites.
17 people participated in the tournament, which was held at the First United Methodist Church in Cheyenne. Eleven of these drove up from Colorado – including one who came all the way from Denver.
Entry fee was $30, which included a catered lunch from Subway. Each division had monetary payouts for 1st through 3ed place.
