Edward Drinker Cope .
Georges Cuvier Jean-Leopold-Nicolas-Frederic-Dagobert Cuvier was born on August 23, 1769. He had a brother, Georges, who was four years old when he died, just a few months before Jean-Leopold was born. Jean-Leopold was always called Georges, in honor of his brother.

Cuvier grew up in the town of Montbeliard in Alsace, then part of the German kingdom of Würtenberg. His father received a pension from the French government, and Cuvier's familiy spoke French as their first language.
