Seasons: 2018-2019 at Cheyenne Little Theatre

The Cheyenne Little Theatre is staging a musical and five plays, its annual Melodrama during Frontier Days, and two Youth Summer Stock productions for its 2018-2019 season.

The Addams Family, directed by Travis Kirchhefer: October 5 – 21, 2018

Charles Addams, an American cartoonist, created what would become the Addams Family as single-panel cartoons for The New Yorker magazine, beginning in 1938. The TV show starring John Astin and Carolyn Jones made its debut in 1964 and lasted until 1966. Addams continued drawing the cartoons until his death in 1988. In 1991, the popularity of The Addams Family rose with the movie starring Raul Julia and Angelica Houston.

The musical, with a book by Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice, and music and lyrics by Andrew Lippa, made its Broadway debut in 2010, starring Nathan Lane as Gomez and Bebe Neuwirth as Morticia.

It’s a Wonderful Life, directed by Nancy Stange:  November 30 – December 16, 2018

The movie It’s a Wonderful Life, a Christmas staple, was released in 1946, directed by Frank Capra and starring James Stewart and Donna Reed. It was based on a short story written by Philip Van Doren Stern called The Greatest Gift.

This play was adapted for the stage by James W. Rogers

Mothers and Sons, directed by Brenda Lyttle:  February 1 – 10, 2019

This play was written by Terrence McNally, who has won Tony Awards for plays Love! Valour! Compassion! and Master Class, and the books for the musicals Kiss of the Spider Woman and Ragtime.

Mothers and Sons made its Broadway debut in 2014, after having premiered at the Bucks County Playhouse in New Hope, Pennsylvania in 2013. Tyne Daly starred as Katharine Gerard. It closed after 104 performances and 33 previews. It is a sequel to McNally’s play, Andre’s Mother, which was aired on American Playhouse in 1990.

Peter Pan, directed by Rory Mack: February 22 – March 10, 2019

Peter Pan was adapted by Craig Sodaro from the novel by J. M. Barrie.

Sodaro has written over 150 plays including Lady Pirates of the Caribbean – The Musical, several Sherlock Holmes plays including Help Us, Mr. Holmes and Alice in Zombieland.

Boeing Boeing: A Jet Setting Comedy, directed by Todd Martin: March 29 – April 14, 2019

Boeing, Boeing is a farce written by Marc Camoletti, a French playwright. It was translated into English by Beverly Cross and Francis Evans and first staged in English in 1962, in London’s West End (now called Theatreland).  It’s initial debut on Broadway in 1965 was not successful, but it was quite popular in its 2009 revival.

A film based on the play was released in 1965, starring Tony Curtis and Jerry Lewis.

The Secret Garden, directed by Mary Hall: May 3 – 19, 2019

Francis Hodgson Burnett’s book, The Secret Garden, was published in 1911. It was adapted into a musicl by Marsha Norman, who wrote the book and lyrics, with music by Lucy Simon.  This musical made its Broadway debut in 1991 and ran for over two years.

Youth Summer Stock

Shrek: The Musical JR: June 29 – July 1, 2019

The book Shrek!, written by William Steig, was published in 1990. Eleven years later it was adapted as a movie starring Michael Myers.

Shrek:The Musical, with a book and lyrics written by David Lindsay-abaire and music by Jeanine Tesori, opened on Broadway in December 2008 and ran for over a year – it then toured the United States.

Shrek: The Musical JR was adapted especially for children.

Twinderella: July 20 – 22, 2019

Twinderella was written by Charlie Lovett, with music and lyrics by Bill Francoeur.  (Don’t confuse it with Twinderella, A Fractioned Fairy Tale, a children’s book written by Corey Rosen Schwartz.)
