Volcano Seven begins as a tribute to "caper" books and films, and in particular to the 1967 episode of Roger Moore's The Saint two-part episode, "The Fiction-Makers."

Reclusive author Amos Klein writes about super-secret agent Charles Lake, who does battle with a ruthless world-wide organization called S.W.O.R.D.: Secret World Order for Revenge and Destruction.

An ingenious criminal has read the five Klein novels, and discovered that "S.W.O.R.D. works! It actually works." So much so that he has formed the organization in real life, recruiting top criminals to do so. He calls himself Warlock (the main villain in the Charles Lake novels) and his minions include Galaxy Rose, Frug, Monk, and the Bishop.

It is his desire to break into Hermetico and steal the priceless items in storage there. But Hermetico is guarded better than Fort Knox. So Warlock attempts to enlist the services of Amos Klein, to write for him the book of how Hermetico was looted.

Simon Templar is visiting Amos Klein when the S.W.O.R.D. minions come calling, and because "Amos Klein" is actually the pseudonym for a female author, Simon is mistaken as Klein and the real author as his secretary.

After a couple of attempts at escape, Simon and Miss Darling (as "Amos" is called, we never find out her real name) buckle down to write the robbery. But then Simon's true identity is revealed, and he must lead S.W.O.R.D. in the attack on Hermetico. Meanwhile, Miss Darling must remain behind, strapped to a board at which several lasers are aimed. If the men don't return by a certain hour... Miss Darling will disappear.
