Ponticus, Heracleides
(More properly, Heracleides Ponticus |
This Greek astronomer's name is Heracleides Ponticus and it is not divided in the fashion to the right, but on the principle of "If I don't know how to spell a word how can I look it up in the dictionary," we've opted to put it here in the "Ps" even though technically his name is never referred to in this fashion. He is "from" Ponticus, it's not his surname.
Asimov writes about him in "The Tragedy of the Moon," S&FS July 1972, anthologized in The Tragedy of the Moon (1973).
"About 350 BC, this Greek astronomer suggested that Venus and Mercury revolved around the sun. [Only three other planets were known, and because of their orbits they were believed to revolve around the Earth."
