The Powder Puff Derby ended in 1977, due to rising fuel costs and the costs incurred in a lawsuit by a male pilot who wanted to be able to participatein the race.

The Air Race Classic began in 1978, to replace it. The Air Race Classic flies halfway across country, rather than all the way across country.

The Air Race Classic has not missed a year since 1978, and is now the longest running cross-country air race.

This cover was stamped on June 23, 1993.

The race started in Corpus Christi, Texas and ended in North Kingston, Rhode Island, with a stopover in Decature, Illinois.

This was the 17th annual race.
